Starbucks plans to unveil new items next week as sales sag. Whole-grain apple bran muffins are among the new items.

Healthier food, bottom line for Starbucks? Starbucks is on the brink of rolling out a serious reinvention of its breakfast food. Details of the chain's long-anticipated move into better-for-you food -- so hush-hush that it had its own code name, Morning Source -- will be unveiled Tuesday. It comes as Starbucks' U.S. stores are struggling with drops in traffic and comparable sales growth as many cash-strapped consumers hesitate to shell out $4 for their java fix.


Spuds McCain

Talk about having the right name at the right time. Given that a certain gentleman named John McCain is about to become the Republican nominee for president, McCain Foods, a Canadian-based producer of frozen french fries and other potato products, has decided the time is right to raise its profile in the United States. McCain is a major brand in the U.S. frozen potato market -- even though Ore-Ida might be the more familiar name.


Gas prices could fall to near $3 by end of year
Gasoline prices, which have declined steadily for more than a month in Chicago and nationally are expected to continue dropping this Labor Day weekend, and could fall to near $3 a gallon before the end of the year, unless Hurricane Gustav decides to rain on the consumer party.
