Prosecutors: Metra cop killed for his gun

Why would anyone execute a uniformed police officer sitting in his squad car? That agonizing question about the 2006 fatal shooting of Metra officer Thomas Cook now has an unnerving answer: for his gun. One of two men suspected in Cook’s murder, Jeremy T. Lloyd, was charged Monday in the slaying and ordered held without bail.

Prosecutors hit gangs where it hurts -- their wallets

Eliazer Bravo Jr. doesn't hang out with the Latin Kings any more. But the 23-year-old Glendale Heights man said it's not because he owes $3,769.79 after getting slapped with an unusual anti-gang lawsuit by DuPage County prosecutors. Instead, Bravo said, he wants to stay away from the notorious street gang so he can care for his 20-month-old daughter, Aliyana. "You have to want to get out of it -- they can't change you," he said of the anti-gang effort, as he cradled the toddler in his arms.

Judge chases down alleged thief

The judge had just signed a narcotics search warrant for Chicago cops when he spotted the crooks Thursday night. They were rummaging through his wife's car in their North Center neighborhood. So Cook County Judge Nicholas Ford gave chase. A former Cook County prosecutor and now Felony Court judge, Ford hoofed it for about two blocks in the winter night, all the while yelling for help from his St. Benedict's neighbors around Addison and Leavitt who flipped porch lights on and ran out to help.

Tips shed light on 1981 McHenry double-murder
Sun-Times and NBC5 exclusive: More than 27 years after a mob-related double murder in McHenry County, a little bit of digging by a 42-year old former baby-sitter has led authorities to reopen what was a very cold case. The information supplied by Holly Hager, who is now a mural painter, has led McHenry County sheriff’s detectives to take a fresh look at the long-unsolved killings. The 1981 murders of 37-year old Ron Scharff and 30-year-old Patricia Freemen were the first on record in the then-tiny town of Lakemoor.

In-person bail hearings could ease jail crowding

The elimination of video bail hearings at the courthouse at 26th and California is expected to create staffing problems for the Cook County sheriff but also could reduce jail crowding, his spokesman said Tuesday. Since 1999, new arrestees have stood in a basement cellblock where a closed-circuit camera transmitted their images to a TV screen in front of a judge in the courtroom.
