NEWS ALERTS:

Beyonce plays Etta James in the movie about the '60s heyday of Chicago's great music label Chess Records. Roger Ebert gives the film three stars. (AP)
Chess Records: birthplace of the wang dang doodle Roger Ebert: An argument could be made that modern rock 'n' roll was launched not at Sun Records in Memphis, but at Chess Records, 2120 S. Michigan, and its earlier South Side locations since the early 1950s. The Rolling Stones even recorded a song named after the address. The great Chess roster included Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Etta James and Chuck Berry.

Sports Hendry, Williams join GMs for big-money swap meet Chris De Luca: Trying to get a clear read on the baseball landscape is tricky at this time of year because so much major talent still is sitting in the clearance aisle. But a week from today -- once the winter meetings conclude in Las Vegas -- we should have a much better feel for the six divisions.
Bears' Adams not a 'down' lineman When Anthony Adams was notified about two hours before the Bears' season opener at Indianapolis that he was going to be inactive, the one question he knew he couldn't ask himself was ''Why?''
Thomas, Noah make Bulls unpredictable After going 3-4 during their recent road swing, the Bulls returned home confident they could take advantage of a more favorable schedule in December. But two games into the month, the Bulls (8-11) have dropped two straight and are looking to regroup again. Perhaps the least surprised person is coach Vinny Del Negro, who has been saying for weeks that the early part of the season will be a roller-coaster ride.

Entertainment Grammy event wasn't revolutionary, but it was televised Jim DeRogatis: For the first time in their 51-year history, Grammy sponsors the Recording Academy announced the nominees for 2008 not at a boring, overblown press conference — but during a boring, overblown television special that aired live Wednesday night from Los Angeles. Leading the pack with eight nominations was the filthy-minded dirty South rapper Lil Wayne. Moody rockers Coldplay garnered seven nods, and rap and R&B stars Jay-Z, Ne-Yo and Chicago's Kanye West claimed six each.

Business AT&T to cut 12,000 jobs Pressured by the economic turmoil and the mounting loss of traditional phone customers, AT&T Inc. is cutting 12,000 jobs, about 4 percent of its work force.
